Welcome to my adventure. This post is the first baby step on realizing a dream. In the summer of 2007, I hope to follow the mother road, Route 66, from Santa Monica, CA to Chicago, IL. But there's a small twist. As great as it would be to travel the route by car or motorcycle, I won't be. I want to do it from the air. My goal is to fly my Cessna 182 along the route. This blog will be a journal of my plans, ideas, and the actual journey.

We stopped in Tucumcari, New Mexico one night on a cross country. We opted to stay at motel in town on the old road. This is a town the world passed by when the Interstate went through closeby. There must have been 30 closed gas stations and the same number of closed motels. The town is hoping for a revitalization as they were reopening the ethanol plant that has been closed for 20 years besides building another new ethanol plant next to it. There are hardly any decent food spots in the
whole town. Lots of folks on welfare!
Tucumcari has been our "first night out/last night out" stops on some of our trips from Texas to California, and in particular to "Route 66 Explorations".
Tucumcari is in about the same condition as most towns along the old road. The deserted motels and gas stations are in town on the old road, but there are very good new motels, restaurants, etc. at the exits along I-40.
The TraveLodge Motel and Del's Restaurant (next to the TraveLodge) have been our favorites. This is an exception to places that far removed from the I-40 exits.
